Raccoon Identification

Raccoon’s are pretty easy to identify with their black mask and ringed tail. They may look cute and cuddly, but they can carry diseases/parasites and be very viscious if provoked. Adult raccoons can weigh over 40lbs and typically lifespan is 5-10 years in the wild.

Raccoon’s usually mate in the winter and the mother will have babies in the springtime. Typically 3-5 cubs are in a litter.  They are mainly out in the night being nocturnal animals, though sometimes you can spot them during the day if in search of food/shelter.

Raccoon Damages

Raccoon damages can happen both inside and outside of the home. They may be looking for food and knock your garbage cans over leaving a mess or find a small crack in the fencing under your deck and squeeze through making the crack larger with every pass. Raccoons will often enter homes before the winter and in the spring, most commonly inside attics, to escape the cold or to nest and raise their young. They are strong animals and can damage the shingles, fascia board, soffits and vents of structures they enter. Raccoon control includes identifying the problem animal is a raccoon, trapping the raccoon humanely, removal of the raccoon, repair of the damages and finally executing exclusion methods such as sealing up the raccoon’s entry points to prevent future invasion.
