Identify Skunks

There are 4 species of skunks throughout the United States, including:

  • Striped Skunk
  • Eastern Spotted Skunk
  • Hooded Skunk
  • Hog-Nosed Skunk

The average skunk size is 20-30 inches long, including the tail, and 6-10 pounds. A skunks average life span is 2-4 years, and they are clearly identified by the black and white markings.

Description

Skunks have strong forefeet and long claws that make them great diggers. As a nocturnal animal, skunks are most active at night. They are turning to be quite the solitary animal, living and foraging alone besides when they are mating. Skunks have litters of 1-7 young in late April and early June. One of a skunks most known characteristic is their defense mechanism. Skunks will attack when they feel cornered or feel that they need to protect their young. Their defense techniques may include growling, spitting, stomping, and spraying.

Skunk Damage

Skunks rarely ever enter homes and businesses to create damages. Problems will be created outside, and the repairs and cleanup can be time consuming and costly. Skunk damages can be identified by finding holes in the lawn, damaged corn, destroyed trash cans, raided poultry houses, and the one of a kind odor.
